Marlene Z. Cohen, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a Professor and Kenneth E. Morehead Endowed Chair in Nursing, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Nursing. She earned her PhD in Clinical Nursing Research from the University of Michigan. Her program of research focuses on understanding how the world is perceived by clients and patients, defining and promoting health and preventing disease, examining the influences of social and physical environments on health and illness, and addressing the effects of illness and treatments on patients and their families. She has over 30 years of experience in phenomenological research focused on understanding the meaning of health, illness, and various treatments and interventions. Her work has explored the perspectives of patients, family members, health care providers, and clients. Their perspectives have been obtained in order to examine the influences of social and physical environments on health and illness and to address how patients and their families view proposed treatments. She has successfully completed 32 studies, and collaborated with other researchers to write over 200 publications.
